LEST WE FORGET

In 9 grade, we have studied lives of Czechoslovak WWII  veterans. We saw that young people from different background went protect their country. We learned that they were heroes because they fought hard, but that they weren´t perfect. We observed how they were often pesecuted during the communism. We observed how they dealt with it. We made powerpoint presentations in Czech for history lessons and also found some inspirational quotes

Lessons in Erasmus + theme - Creaiting Peace

Here is a brief summary of the teaching of this subject we have had this winter here in Norway. In this first session we looked at four main areas.

Historical retrospect on 2nd World War:
• A conflict between neighbours in Europe with various alliances
• The reason for the war with economic decline, unemployment, growing anti-Semitism and belief in the German superpower
• Norwegian heavy water sabotage - delaying the process of developing nuclear weapons.  Further reading here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norwegian_heavy_water_sabotage
This
winter it has been shown a new TV series about this action that has been very popular.
• The creation of UN rules of war, dilemmas and consequences

Conflicts of national character:
• Alta action, a conflict between ethnic groups, conservationists, the politics on the left side in Norwegian and the government. The conflict revolved around whether to expand or preserve untouched nature.
• Political games, civil disobedience and conflict resolution

Religious conflicts related to freedom of expression:
• Use of violence and threats
• Terror
• The attack on Charlie Hebdo and freedom of speech in Paris, a French, satirical weekly magazine

Conflicts at school:

WWII Memorial Visit

There is a big WWII memorial  in Hrabyně,

near Ostrava. so we went to visit it. We went by bus.

We visited the memorial with worksheet that helped us to pick the most interesting things. We learned a lot about the WWII - how people in the army, but also in the countside lived, about persecution of Jews, about resistence movement, about our army formation in Great Britain and USSR.

Some parts of the exhibition were wery hard to go through - the Mauthausen Stairs of Death and then the exhibition of fight around Ostrava. Some of us like to play War Thunder, WoW and so on, but this was something completely different. War is not like in a computer game. We will remember that.

Reflection from Sweden

Here is a reflection from one of our students about their work with the project

More then 200 years of peace
Sweden has a world record in peace, last time we were belligerent was in 1814. Although we have been close to war at a few occasions. We have studied three of these problems and have discussed why they didn’t lead to war or revolutions.  Our conclusions are that with democracy, equality and compromising we’ve been able to solve these complications. The belligerent parties have been able to agree of an essential goal, to avoid any problems. Once you have agreed on those terms it becomes easier to find a solution on the problem you’ve faced. Another thing we’ve learned is to be critical and that you must remember that while Sweden created a more equal society, there were groups who wasn’t under a long time allowed to take part of the same rights, for example our native people, the Sami. While we were atpeace we were still selling weapons to belligerent countries. It feels like we’ve found good principles for making peace, even though these principles haven’t included everyone in both Sweden and people in other countries.
