Emergency therapeutic game

We did another climbing therapeutic game, but we weren´t climbing - we pretended someone got a broken leg and we have to carry him to the safety. It took a lot of time and efforts. Many pupils behaved much differently than in classroom: some did much better, some panicked, with some I would not want to go on a trip alone. Then we talked about it a lot.

In the picture, the injured is not visible - he is somewhere higher. We didn´t take many pictures, we concentrated on the game.

Rapelling - therapeutic game

Rapelling means going down from a rock or an artificial clmbing wall by yourself - on a rope. It´s not falling. It looks cool from the ground but it is quite scary when you are on the wall and ready to go down on your own. It´s a big thing when you manage to do it.

We managed all - we tried first several times in the gym on a ladder, and today on a climbing wall. Everyone cheered, not just your best friends. It´s our favourite climbing activity now.

Outdoor therapeutic games

It was a surprise.
We do climbing at school, but we didn´t know dome of the things we do are therapeutic gams. So here you are:

Rope Games - this is easy, you need just a rope and you can do it even in a classroom. We did in on the grass while waiting for climbing. It was fun.

Snow Blindness - we did that on the wall and the new ones on the ground. It was more difficult than it looked. The worst was not to start arguing with your partner.

More therapeutic games from Ostrava

Hi,

we did two more therapeutic games. They are indoor too, since it is cold outside.

First one is Margareta - you need a pen and a paper for that and it was OK.

and the second one is Changing Places - some of us liked it a lot, some found it embarassing and a bit unfair.

Files with what to do and how it feels are on Google Drive.

Therapeutic games in Ostrava

We finally decided on one game we would like to show you (we did it before during an anti-bullying project day) and the other game was a surprise from our teachers.

We chose the Ship activity, that helps us understand we need to cooperate in life.

And the surprise was the Classroom Cake activity: it was fine also, a bit different, we had to think about that.

We did also the activity files and we wrote feedback - it is on the Google Drive.

Cranes II.

We visited the Opava Museum for an educational programme about people persecuted by Nazi and then by communists. We learned how they felt about that and what they do with their lives later. Some were avesome - they managed to be happy still, they didn´t live in hate. The lady said that the best revenge is to live well. It must be hard to really live by this quote.

We have planned to fold some cranes in the square ourside  and to put them at the soldiers memorial but it was raining - so we folded them inside. Small ones for the memorial and big one for the school.

COMENIUS - his life (Ostrava, Grade 8)

Jan Amos Komenský – Comenius
Teacher of the Nations
(1592-1670)

Teacher, educator, philosopher and writer

  •          Founder of modern education

  •        Wrote 154 books (many of them used as textbooks for more than 100 years)
  • -       The first to use pictures in textbooks
  • -       Promoted effective teaching based on the natural gradual growth from simple to more comprehensive concepts
  • -       Promoted education also for women and poor
  • -       Promoted lifelong learning
  • -       Supported logical thinking instead of just memorization
  • -       Was offerred to be the first President of Harvard College – he declined

He became a priest of Moravian Brethren church (served in Fulnek - you visited it). In consequence of the Thirty Years War, he lost all his property and had to leave with all Brethren into exile when the Habsburg Counter-Reformation persecuted the Protestants in Bohemia. He travelled then around Europe, promoted his education ideas and hoped that it would be possible to return to his home country.

Many education projects have been named after Comenius. His birthday  - 28. March  - is celebrated as Teacher´s Day.

Ostrava Liberation Day - April 30

We visited the celebrations of liberation of Ostrava in 1945. First we watched soldiers laying flower wreaths at a memorial in Komenskeho Sady. Some of the living veterans got medals and the dead veterans got flower wreaths. Some politicans had speeches. Then we watched planes flying over the city. It was very noisy. Then we had an opportunity to have a look at historical and modern army equipment. Some of us stayed until afternoon to watch the battle of Ostrava reenactment with planes, tanks, historical cars and soldiers in old uniforms. It was very noisy and smelly and scary. It was also crowded. We could pick empty patrons after the battle. I would not want to be in a war. I hope that wars can be prevented by negotiations.

LEST WE FORGET

In 9 grade, we have studied lives of Czechoslovak WWII  veterans. We saw that young people from different background went protect their country. We learned that they were heroes because they fought hard, but that they weren´t perfect. We observed how they were often pesecuted during the communism. We observed how they dealt with it. We made powerpoint presentations in Czech for history lessons and also found some inspirational quotes

WWII Memorial Visit

There is a big WWII memorial  in Hrabyně,

near Ostrava. so we went to visit it. We went by bus.

We visited the memorial with worksheet that helped us to pick the most interesting things. We learned a lot about the WWII - how people in the army, but also in the countside lived, about persecution of Jews, about resistence movement, about our army formation in Great Britain and USSR.

Some parts of the exhibition were wery hard to go through - the Mauthausen Stairs of Death and then the exhibition of fight around Ostrava. Some of us like to play War Thunder, WoW and so on, but this was something completely different. War is not like in a computer game. We will remember that.

First Days of the Independent Czechoslovakia

At the end of the Great War (1914-1918),  the Austro-Hungarian empire collapsed and new states emerged. One of them was Czechoslovakia.

Czechoslovak politicians both in the country and abroad wanted to make the transition as peaceful as possible, without armed conflicts. They wanted to prevent a violent revolution. We studied how they did it:

1) When they were taking over important offices like ministries, town halls, etc. and railway stations, they didn´t rely on army or militia, but just on mandate by provisional government, to avoid armed conflict.

2) They kept people informed: used media - press and radio - and posters in the streets : people were told the country is free, who leads the country now and whose orders they should obey.

3) They encouraged people to protect personal freedom and property of all parties involved.

4) They appealed to people´s pride on being finally independent and used quotes from well-known Czech patriotic authors (ex. Kollar: Only those who respect freedom of others are worthy of freedom.)

5) They reminded people that the whole civilized world is looking at them and and judging if they are worthy of independence.

Looking for Peace - grade 7 - George of Podebrady

We studied the life and work of one of Czech kings, Jiří z Poděbrad - George of Podebrady.

He was elected to be a king after death of Ladislav Habsbursky - some thought  Jiri poisoned the young king, but in was proven that Ladislav had leukaemia.

Jiří tried to create something like European Union - a treaty among all Christian states.
- The member states would promise to settle all differences by peaceful means.
- There was to be a common parliament and other common institutions and supranational insignia.

He sent his courtiers to other kings to promote this idea. The plane didn´t work out then in 15th century.

From pupils´worksheets:

- He doesn´t look like a cool guy, because he is fat, but he was cool. He managed to give to Czech a period of peace and to the Europe a good idea.

- I like that he wasn´t whining about hard life - his parents weren´t married and it was a problem then and some people made fun of him. He didn´t mind and did his best, and ended as the only elected Czech king from Czećh nobility.

- He had to be really good at talking to people, since he managed to keep both catholics and hussites happy.

He proposed peace first to Czech warlords and then to whole Europe. I wonder how he did it that Czech people listened to him and accepted him.

Moravian Brethern Museum visit

We visited two museums in Suchdol nad Odrou. We went by train there.

The first museum was in an old house. It was about history of Moravian Brethern (Brothers) in Suchdol, how they didn´t want to change their faith and to fight, so they left the country and went into all the world, from Greenland to Nepal...

The second museum was about aircraft archeology - it means that people dig our crashed planed. It was in the cellar. It was cool but also scary - they displayed things they found in planes, including personal  items like family photos, letters pilots had on them - they were so young, not much older then some of our friends from 9. grade. We wondered if they wanted to participate in this war.

The coolest and scariest thing was the reconstructed plane - it is not safe like modern cars for exemple, it´s thin like tuna can.

Sadako´s Cranes

We learned about Sadako Sasaki and her desire for peace, and we also learned how to make a paper crane. We made some, put them in box and will hang them one by one as we study peace solutions. More pictures in our Picasa gallery.
